The concept of converting waste heat into electrical power is an unusual concept and has been around since the early 19th century.
Just as we’re developing innovative waste heat recovery for automakers, we are also partnering with industry leaders for pilot deployments to explore the technical and economic feasibility of our solutions in our customer’s industrial environments.
Energy-intensive industries, such as cement, glass, and metals production, generate a tremendous amount of heat, and most of this heat dissipates into the environment through smoke stacks or waste water.
We have been successful in designing and building waste heat recovery devices on a prototype level that have performed to modeling expectations. We have also been targeting large scale industrial applications, too.
In fact, we have a special division that makes power generation devices for the oil and the gas industry. Oil pipelines run through some very unfriendly territories and are not always available to the grid. Each of these pumping stations and control stations have to have electrical power from some place. We build and install the thermal electric power generation stations that provide electricity for these stations and so can monitor, measure, and control the oil flow through the oil and gas fields throughout the world.
Furthermore, Gentherm acquired Global Thermoelectric in April 2014, creating a new subsidiary, Gentherm Global Power Technologies (GPT). This subsidiary provides us additional expertise and technical prowess in advanced technologies, such as thermoelectric generators and solutions based on industrial gensets, hybrids, photovoltaics, and grid-connected systems.
